I’m Desiree and this is my first blog (as you may already know!). I’ve decided to keep a blog to become my online journal (because I prefer typing over writing in an actual journal) and as a way to post about my photography and any trips that I may take in the future. I’m not the most exciting person, but I’m extremely excited to keep this blog. I hope that those of you who read it will find it comical, thought-provoking, or just something to read to pass time.
The first thing I want to address is the title of my blog… You may ask yourself “why ‘Polka Dots and Other Thoughts'”? Well, the answer to that is because I’m just terrible at coming up with names for things. I love polka dots, so I figured it would be a good starting point. No, my posts won’t be about polka dots (at least not all the time!) but mostly the “other thoughts” part of the title. As I said earlier, this is my online journal that I’m using to express my feelings about things or post my photography photos or even recipes because I love to bake and cook! So anyways, that’s the story behind the name of this blog. Long story short: there isn’t really a story behind it!
Alright, so for the first post, I’ve just decided to write about myself, sorry if that’s boring.
I’m Desiree. I’m 20 years old as of tomorrow (February 7th, 2016.) I have 2 younger sisters and a younger brother. My parents have been divorced since I was 12 and it was one of the best things that happened to my family. I’m originally from a very small town in northwestern Wisconsin called Milltown. My graduating class was 64 students. I currently go to school at the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. I’m studying animal biology and environmental science in hopes to one day work with and/or study marine mammals. Or any exotic animals, really. I plan on moving to Green Bay this summer which is actually very terrifying. Although I’ll have two of my best friends living with me, which makes the move a little easier. I’ve never really been one to get homesick, so it’s not the leaving home that scares me. It’s more like the fact that I have to start adulting a lot more!
I have a lot of acquaintances and few close friends, but my close friends mean the world to me. Some from high school and some from college. I also have a wonderful boyfriend who’s been amazing and in my life for almost 2 years now and I couldn’t be more thankful. But not to worry, I’m not much for public, online sap, so there won’t be much more than that!
My favorite hobbies include photography, volunteering, learning new things, cooking and baking, listening to music, reading, walking outside, and traveling.
I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to take photos for friends and family and I would say that’s as close as I can get to having a passion. I wish I could say I had a serious passion for something and that it consumes my life and that I was extremely talented with that passion, but I can honestly say that I don’t really have that. I hope one day I can figure that out!
Here at UW- Green Bay I’m involved in the Ambassador program (I’m 1 of 30 students who give tours and help with the freshmen orientation and registration.) and I’m also apart of the Habitat for Humanity chapter here as well. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be a part of these wonderful organizations and joining both have been the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve been able to make wonderful friends, try new things, help people with their futures, and create homes for people who haven’t been as blessed as I have to have a good home. Last spring I was able to travel to Kentucky with 10 other members from Habitat for Humanity to help build a home there and it was life changing.
I could go on and on about myself but I think I’m going to leave it here for tonight. If you’re still reading, thank you! I hope that you’ll enjoy my other posts and that I can keep up with this whole blogging thing.
Until next time-
